Foynes Island Tour

View the Estuary from the sea passing through the busy port of Foynes and past the residence of one of Irelands greatest maritime circumnavigators Conor O'Brien, who sailed around the world from 1923 to 1925.

We then head out towards the 1 km long jetty at Aughinish Alumina sweeping past the 100,000 tonne unloading station. We continue on to the historical Beeves rock lighthouse which was built in 1855. We spend sometime here with the engine idling (a chance to catch your breath) giving passengers time to view the granite built lighthouse. After a breather here we make for Co. Clare coastline.

This area of coastline is almost totally unspoiled and offers everchanging scenery and some birdlife which is almost impossible to observe from the shore. We then approach Labasheeda village and sweep over to kilteery pier before arriving back in Foynes Harbour .

Estuary Historical and Wildlife tour

From Foynes we head Southwest along the Estuary taking in the magnificient panorama of the Clare and Limerick coastline which comes into full view as we leave Foynes Marina. We pass the Famous Glin castle as the coastline changes from mile to mile. In the distance Tarbert Lighthouse comes into full view and we approach the channel where the estuary is at it narrowest and most challenging.

We buzz past the Tarbert to Killimer Car ferry on the way to Moneypoint, one of the largest power generating plants in Ireland .

We idle here for a few minutes and then head for the monastic settlement of Scattery Island . This Island was inhabitated since pre Christian times and was also a Christian place of pilgrimage. Buildings include one of the great surviving examples of a round tower dating back to the 6th Century AD. There is also a holy well which is still in repute and seven ruined chapels and churches. We then follow our path back to Foynes Marina.
